A uniquely Tenerife tradition — guachinches are rustic, family-run pop-up eateries originally created by local winegrowers to sell surplus wine directly to the public alongside homemade food. Found primarily in the Orotava Valley and northern wine regions (Tacoronte-Acentejo D.O.), a typical guachinche offers simple wooden benches, barrel tables, and a handwritten menu of local dishes: carne fiesta (marinated pork), costillas con papas (ribs with Canarian wrinkly potatoes with mojo sauce), queso asado (grilled local cheese), escaldón (gofio stew), and house wine served by the jug. Prices are extraordinarily affordable (€8–12 per person). The guachinche season traditionally runs November–April when new wine is released. Notable guachinches: Guachinche La Huerta de los Ñames in La Orotava, Guachinche El Cordero in El Sauzal, and Guachinche La Casona in Tacoronte. Look for a simple sign reading "Guachinche" or "Vino de la casa." Regulations now require guachinches to display an official registration number.
