Internet & Connectivity

Internet & Connectivity in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands have modern telecommunications infrastructure thanks to submarine cables connecting the archipelago to mainland Spain and Africa. Fibre optic and 4G/5G coverage is excellent in urban areas and good in most tourist zones.

Fibre Optic Broadband

Major providers (Movistar, Vodafone, Orange, MásMóvil, Digi) offer fibre connections up to 1 Gbps. Prices range from €30-€60 per month, often bundled with mobile and TV. Fibre coverage reaches most urban and coastal areas, though it may be limited in remote rural areas of the smaller islands. Newer providers like Digi offer competitive standalone fibre from €25/month.

Mobile 4G/5G

4G coverage is virtually complete across all inhabited islands. 5G is being rolled out in major cities (Las Palmas, Santa Cruz, La Laguna) and tourist areas. Operators offer plans from €10/month for basic mobile-only packages. Prepaid SIM cards are widely available for short-term stays.

Internet at Home — Installation Tips

Setting up home internet typically requires a Spanish bank account or credit card, NIE, and proof of address. Installation usually takes 1-2 weeks from ordering. Many apartments in tourist areas already have fibre connections installed, making activation quicker.

Coworking Spaces

Coworking spaces have proliferated in recent years, especially in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (a recognised digital nomad hub), Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz, and Costa Adeje. Typical pricing: €80-€200/month for a dedicated desk. Most offer high-speed internet, meeting rooms, and networking events.
