Banking

Banking in the Canary Islands

Opening a bank account in Spain is relatively straightforward for residents. Major banks with a presence in the Canary Islands include CaixaBank, BBVA, Santander, Sabadell, Bankinter, and local savings banks (cajas rurales).

Opening an Account

Typical documentation required: valid passport or Spanish DNI, NIE (non-residents can open a non-resident account without NIE in some cases), proof of address (utility bill or rental contract), and proof of income or employment contract. Some banks now offer online account opening with video verification.

Non-Resident Accounts

Non-residents can open bank accounts without an NIE in many cases. These accounts typically have higher fees. To convert a non-resident account to a resident account, you must present your residence certificate and NIE. The bank reports non-resident account holders to Spanish tax authorities.

Digital Banking

Digital banks such as N26, Revolut, and Wise are widely used, especially among the expatriate and digital nomad community. These offer Spanish IBANs (ES starting numbers) and allow you to avoid some traditional bank fees. Openbank (Santander's digital bank) and BBVA's online accounts are Spanish-regulated digital options.

Typical Bank Fees

Many Spanish banks charge maintenance fees (€15-€50/quarter) unless you meet minimum requirements such as direct deposit of salary/pension or minimum balance. Digital banks generally offer free accounts. ATM withdrawals from other banks may incur fees (€1-€3 per withdrawal).
