La Palma's most celebrated spirit — Ron Aldea — is produced by the oldest rum distillery in the Canary Islands (Destilería Aldea, founded 1983) in the lush green municipality of San Andrés y Sauces. Unlike Caribbean-style rums, Ron Aldea is made from sugar cane grown on La Palma itself, benefiting from the island's volcanic soil and distinctive microclimate. The distillery produces several varieties: Ron Aldea Blanco (white rum, excellent for cocktails), Ron Aldea Dorado (golden, aged in oak), Ron Aldea Reserva 8 Años (8-year aged, complex and sippable), and limited edition special releases up to 15 years old. The distillery offers free tours and tastings where visitors can sample the full range and learn about the cane-to-bottle process. Ron Aldea has won multiple international spirit awards. The distillery shop sells the complete range including La Palma-specific gifts: rum-infused honey, rum chocolates, and rum cakes. The distillery is also known for producing artisan liqueurs including Ronmiel — a Canarian speciality of rum blended with local honey. The location in San Andrés y Sauces is conveniently close to the Los Tilos UNESCO Biosphere Reserve laurel forest, making it an excellent combined trip.
