Museo del Queso Majorero (Antigua)

A delightful small museum dedicated to Fuerteventura's most famous product — Queso Majorero, a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) goat cheese that has been produced on the island for centuries and is recognized as one of Spain's finest cheeses. The museum is housed in a beautifully restored traditional windmill (molino) on the outskirts of the village of Antigua, set in a cactus garden with views of the arid Fuerteventura landscape. The ground floor of the windmill explains the history of goat herding on Fuerteventura — the 'majorera' goat breed (a hardy, drought-resistant breed adapted to the island's semi-desert conditions), traditional milking and cheese-making techniques, and the evolution of the industry from subsistence farming to the modern PDO-regulated production (25 dairies currently operating on the island). Exhibits include traditional cheese-making equipment, historical photographs, and a short documentary film. The highlight is the tasting room where visitors can sample three varieties of Queso Majorero: tierno (young and creamy, aged 8–20 days), semicurado (semi-cured, 20–60 days), and curado (aged 60+ days, firm and nutty), each with distinct flavors. The cheese is produced from Majorera goat milk and can be plain, with paprika (pimentón), or with gofio (toasted cornmeal crust) — the latter being a uniquely Canarian specialty. The on-site shop sells cheese (vacuum-packed for travel), local wine, gofio, and jams. The windmill itself is one of Fuerteventura's best-preserved traditional mills, and the surrounding garden includes examples of native plants and a traditional 'era' (circular threshing floor). Open Tuesday–Saturday 9:30 AM–5:30 PM. Entry: €3 adults, €1.50 children. Allow 45–60 minutes. Located 20 minutes' drive from Puerto del Rosario. Combine with a visit to the nearby Centro de Artesanía Molino de Antigua (craft center in another mill) or the Betancuria historic town (10 minutes' drive). Best for food-interested travelers and families. The majorero goat breed is iconic — these goats are visible grazing across the island's volcanic fields.
