Betancuria — Traditional Majorero Cuisine
The historic former capital of Fuerteventura is also the island's premier destination for traditional Majorero cuisine — the distinct food culture of Fuerteventura shaped by centuries of goat herding, windmill agriculture, and coastal fishing. Betancuria's restaurants serve authentic dishes rarely found in coastal resorts: cabrito (roast kid goat), the island's most celebrated dish; puchero majorero (a hearty stew of chickpeas, pork, chorizo, potatoes, and vegetables); gofio escaldado (gofio flour mixed with fish broth, a staple food of the original Majorero people); and almogrote (a pâté-like paste of cured goat cheese, garlic, and paprika, served on bread). The best restaurant is Restaurante Don Antonio (Don Antonio Mesa), consistently rated as the finest traditional restaurant on the island; his cabrito al horno and almogrote are legendary. Other excellent restaurants include Casa Santa María and Vailima — all offering shaded terraces in the verdant valley surrounded by palm trees. Majorero goat cheese (Queso Majorero, PDO status) is available everywhere — the island produces some of Spain's finest goat cheeses. The combination of historic atmosphere and authentic food makes Betancuria an essential culinary stop.
