La Geria (Wine Region)

Lanzarote's unique wine-growing region, a landscape unlike any other vineyard on Earth — a vast sea of black volcanic ash (picón) stretching across the island's centre, dotted with thousands of semicircular stone walls (zocos) protecting individual vines. The ash layer, deposited by the 1730–1736 eruptions, retains moisture from the sparse rainfall (approximately 150 mm/year) and dew, funneling it down to the soil beneath while preventing evaporation. Each vine (primarily Malvasía Volcánica and Listán Negro varieties) is planted in a funnel-shaped hollow dug through the ash to the soil below, protected by a semicircular stone wall from the constant trade winds. This D.O. Lanzarote wine region produces distinctive mineral-rich white, rosé, and red wines. Numerous bodegas offer tastings: Bodega La Geria (the oldest, est. late 19th century), Bodegas Rubicón, Bodegas El Grifo (oldest winery in the Canaries, est. 1775), and Bodegas Stratvs. The LZ-30 road through La Geria is one of the most scenic drives in the Canary Islands.
