Ermita de la Virgen de los Reyes (La Dehesa)

A remote whitewashed chapel in the desolate westernmost tip of El Hierro, dedicated to the Virgen de los Reyes (Virgin of the Kings), the patron saint of El Hierro, and the spiritual heart of the island's most important cultural tradition — the Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes. The chapel sits at an elevation of approximately 800 meters in the rugged pastureland known as La Dehesa, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve landscape of volcanic cones, ancient juniper trees (Sabinas) bent into surreal shapes by the relentless trade winds, and views across the Atlantic. The current chapel dates from the 18th century, though a sanctuary has existed on this site since at least the 16th century following a legend that the Virgin appeared to shepherds here. Inside, the simple chapel houses the venerated 16th-century wooden statue of the Virgin, dressed in elaborate embroidered robes. The chapel is the endpoint of the Bajada de la Virgen — an extraordinary religious and cultural festival held every four years (next in 2025) in which the statue is carried 27 km on foot from the chapel to the island capital Valverde in a massive pilgrimage involving thousands of participants, traditional costumes, music, and dancing. The festival dates back to 1741 and is one of the most important traditional celebrations in the Canary Islands, drawing Hierro emigrants back from around the world. Outside the festival period, the chapel is a peaceful, contemplative place with extraordinary views. The journey to reach it through the Dehesa landscape of twisted junipers and volcanic cones is itself one of the most memorable scenic drives in the Canary Islands. The chapel is typically open for visitors (check locally — hours are irregular as it's a functioning religious site, not a tourist attraction). Entry is free. The surrounding area offers walking trails through the juniper groves. A 40-minute drive from Valverde via the HI-500 road. Best visited in the morning for the clearest views. Combine with a visit to the nearby Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Reyes (a larger pilgrimage complex adjacent to the chapel). Dress respectfully as this is an active place of worship. The sense of isolation and the power of the natural landscape here is profound — this is El Hierro at its most elemental.
