La Restinga Seafood Dockside Dining

The southernmost fishing village in the Canary Islands, La Restinga, is El Hierro's seafood capital. Located on the island's southern tip beside the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Mar de las Calmas, this is where El Hierro's fishing fleet lands its daily catch. A cluster of seafood restaurants line the harbour, all serving fish that was swimming just hours earlier. Specialties unique to El Hierro include: grilled alfonsiño (a deep-water fish particularly associated with El Hierro), cherne (wreckfish), bocinegro (common seabream), vieja (parrotfish), and fresh tuna when in season. The standout restaurant is Restaurante La Vieja — consistently rated the best on the island, known for its grilled fish and seafood paella. Other excellent options: Restaurante El Varadero (directly on the dock, excellent calamares) and Restaurante Bahía de La Restinga (views over the fishing boats). Dining on the terrace at sunset watching the fishing fleet return is El Hierro's definitive food experience. All restaurants offer moderate prices (€15–30 per person). The village is also the dive centre of the island, and many restaurants cater to the dive community with post-dive meals. The Mar de las Calmas provides some of the fish served. La Restinga is approximately 30 minutes from the capital Valverde. Best for lunch.
