Masca (Mountain Hamlet & Gorge)

A dramatically situated mountain village perched at 650 metres elevation in the heart of the Teno Massif. Masca is one of the most picturesque settlements in the Canary Islands, with traditional stone houses clinging to narrow ridges surrounded by towering volcanic cliffs. The village was once a hideout for pirates. The famous Masca Gorge trail (Barranco de Masca) descends from the village through a spectacular ravine to Masca Beach on the Atlantic — a demanding 4.5 km hike taking 3–4 hours one way. Access to the gorge trail is currently regulated (check the Cabildo de Tenerife website for up-to-date booking requirements). The winding approach road (TF-436) offers breathtaking mountain views at every turn. A small museum and several traditional restaurants serve local cuisine including goat stew and almogrote cheese spread.
