Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA)

A striking contemporary cultural complex opened in 2008, designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron (the team behind Tate Modern and Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium). TEA is a landmark of modern architecture in the Canary Islands, recognizable by its angular glass and concrete design with dramatic overhangs and perforated façades that create a constantly shifting play of light and shadow. The complex houses three main cultural spaces: the Instituto Óscar Domínguez (a gallery dedicated to the surrealist painter born in La Laguna in 1906, with rotating exhibitions of his works alongside international surrealist artists), the Centro de Fotografía Isla de Tenerife (one of Spain's leading photography centers, with regular exhibitions of contemporary international photographers), and the Biblioteca Municipal (a stunning public library over two floors with reading rooms, a children's section, and free Wi-Fi). The TEA also features a cinema screening independent and arthouse films (original language with Spanish subtitles), a café-restaurant with terrace, and a well-curated gift shop. The exhibitions change every 3–6 months. The architecture itself is worth the visit — the building's dramatic cantilevered entrance plaza is a popular meeting point. Open Tuesday–Sunday 10 AM–8 PM. Library open Monday–Friday 8:30 AM–8:30 PM. Gallery entry: €5 (free on Fridays 4–8 PM and Sundays). Photography center: free. Library: free. Combined ticket with MUNA available. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the galleries. Located next to the MUNA — both can be visited in a single half-day cultural itinerary. A 10-minute walk from Plaza de España.
