A beautifully preserved 17th-century mansion in the historic town of La Orotava, famous for its magnificent carved wooden balconies — the finest surviving example of traditional Canarian domestic architecture. The House of the Balconies (also known as Casa Méndez-Fonseca) is instantly recognizable by its three-story façade featuring five intricately carved balconies made from Canarian pine (tea wood), decorated with geometric patterns, floral motifs, and latticework that showcase the extraordinary skill of 17th-century Canarian woodcarvers. The house operates as a museum and living craft center. The ground floor exhibits explain the history of the house, the town of La Orotava, and Canarian architectural traditions. The upper floors are furnished as a period residence with 17th–19th century furniture, ceramics, tapestries, and household items, giving visitors an immersive glimpse of aristocratic life in colonial Tenerife. The courtyard and adjacent workshop are dedicated to the preservation of traditional Canarian crafts — visitors can watch artisans working on 'calado' (drawn-thread embroidery, a Canarian lace tradition), basket weaving, pottery, and cigar rolling. The craft shop sells authentic handmade products at fair prices (unlike many tourist souvenir shops). The courtyard features a typical Canarian central patio with a wooden gallery, banana plants, and a traditional 'destiladera' (water filtration system). The house is one of the most photographed buildings in the Canary Islands and a symbol of the island's architectural heritage. Entry: €5 adults, €3 children. Open daily 9 AM–6 PM. Allow 45–60 minutes. Located in the historic center of La Orotava — combine with a walk through the town's cobbled streets, the nearby Jardines Victoria (terraced gardens), and the Iglesia de la Concepción (16th-century church). Free parking nearby. The town of La Orotava is itself one of Tenerife's most beautiful, with flower-filled balconies and views of the Teide volcano and the Atlantic. The famous Corpus Christi flower carpets (June) are created on the streets directly outside the Casa de los Balcones.
