Loro Parque (Puerto de la Cruz)

Tenerife's world-famous zoological park and one of the most acclaimed animal parks in Europe, originally founded in 1972 as a parrot sanctuary (hence the name 'Loro' meaning parrot in Spanish). The park has grown into a 13.5-hectare tropical paradise home to over 400 animal species including orcas (the only orca show in the European Union), bottlenose dolphins, sea lions, penguins (Planet Penguin — the world's largest penguinarium with a simulated Antarctic environment featuring real snow and icebergs), gorillas, jaguars, tigers, chimpanzees, alligators, sharks, and the world's largest collection of parrots with over 350 species. Key attractions: Orca Ocean (spectacular orca shows), Dolphin Show, Sea Lion Show, Katandra Treetops (walk-through aviary), and the Thai Village restaurant overlooking the orca pool. Excellent family amenities: baby changing rooms, stroller rentals, kids' menus, and shaded rest areas.
