Teno Rural Park — Punta de Teno
Tenerife's wild northwest — the Teno Rural Park is a rugged, ancient volcanic massif at the island's westernmost point, laced with some of the most rewarding and least crowded hiking trails on the island. The Punta de Teno trail system offers multiple routes through a landscape of dramatic sea cliffs, terraced hillsides, and isolated hamlets that feel far removed from the resort south. The most popular hike is the trail from the hamlet of Teno Alto down to the Punta de Teno lighthouse (approximately 6 km one way, 3 hours), descending through a landscape of agave terraces, wild dragon trees, and abandoned farmhouses with the Atlantic Ocean and the silhouette of La Gomera visible across the water. The lighthouse at the tip — accessible by road (TF-445, with restricted private car access; a shuttle bus operates from Buenavista del Norte) — provides a spectacular endpoint with views of the Los Gigantes cliffs to the south and the open Atlantic. Alternatively, the circular route around the hamlets of Teno Alto (PR-TF 55, approximately 5 km, 2 hours) offers a less-demanding walk through traditional Canarian rural landscapes with panoramic views at every turn. The entire Teno area is designated as a Special Protection Area (ZEPA) for birds — look for osprey, Barbary falcon, and the rare laurel pigeon. Free access. Parking at the Teno Alto trailheads is limited — arrive early (before 9 AM on weekends). The shuttle bus from Buenavista del Norte to Punta de Teno runs regularly (€1 each way). Best months: October–May (summer heat can be intense on the exposed sections of the trail). The winding TF-436 approach road through the Teno Mountains is an experience in itself — narrow, steep, and thrilling. A 1-hour 15-minute drive from Costa Adeje. Combine with a meal in the village of Los Carrizales or Buenavista del Norte for authentic Canarian cuisine. The Teno massif offers a hiking experience that feels genuinely remote and wild, yet is within day-trip distance of the main tourist areas — a hidden gem for walkers.
