Anaga Rural Park — Sendero de los Sentidos

A journey into one of Europe's last remaining ancient laurel cloud forests — the Anaga Rural Park (declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2015) occupies the northeastern tip of Tenerife and preserves an ecosystem that once covered much of the Mediterranean basin 20 million years ago. The 'Sendero de los Sentidos' (Trail of the Senses) is the park's signature introductory walk — three short interconnected loops (500 m, 1.1 km, and 1.4 km) starting from the Cruz del Carmen visitor center that wind through the heart of the laurisilva (laurel forest), a prehistoric jungle of laurel trees, tree heathers, and giant ferns permanently bathed in mist from the trade-wind clouds. The air is cool, moist, and heavy with the scent of moss, damp earth, and laurel leaves — a sensory immersion unlike anything else in the Canary Islands. The trail is partly on raised wooden boardwalks and partly on well-maintained earth paths, designed to be accessible while protecting the forest floor. Three options: Loop 1 (500 m, barrier-free, 20 minutes) is wheelchair-accessible; Loop 2 (1.1 km, 40 minutes) takes you deeper into the forest with some steps; Loop 3 (1.4 km, 1 hour) descends to a viewpoint through denser vegetation. The Cruz del Carmen visitor center has parking, toilets, a café, and informative displays about the laurel forest ecosystem. Free access, no reservation needed. The Anaga region enjoys a cooler, wetter microclimate than southern Tenerife — bring a waterproof jacket even on sunny days; the cloud forest lives up to its name. A 25-minute drive from Santa Cruz or 1 hour from Puerto de la Cruz via the TF-12 road. Best months: year-round (the cloud forest is most atmospheric with mist), but clearest walking conditions March–October. Combine with the longer trail PR-TF-6 (Chamorga–Roque Bermejo) for a full-day Anaga experience, or drive the winding TF-114 to the remote hamlets of Taganana and Benijo for wild coastal scenery. The Anaga laurel forest is a genuine botanical time capsule — there are very few places in Europe where you can walk through a forest that looks much as it did in the Tertiary period.
