Mirador del Río

An architectural masterpiece by César Manrique, opened in 1973, perched 475 metres above sea level on the Risco de Famara escarpment at the island's northern tip. The viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramic views across the 2 km-wide El Río strait to the island of La Graciosa and the rest of the Chinijo Archipelago (Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste). Manrique's design conceals the building within the rock face, topped by local stone and camouflaged from the outside — only the viewing balcony and two signature dome-shaped white structures are visible. Inside, the curved observation lounge features floor-to-ceiling windows, sculptural details, and Manrique's signature integration of architecture with the landscape. Outside terraces offer unfiltered views. A café serves drinks with one of the best views in the Canary Islands. The road leading here includes a winding ascent through dramatic volcanic terrain.
