Fundación César Manrique

The former home and studio of Lanzarote's most celebrated artist, César Manrique (1919–1992), converted into a museum and foundation after his death. Built in 1968 on the site of a lava flow from the 1730–1736 eruptions, the house is a sublime example of Manrique's philosophy of art-nature integration: five underground chambers formed by volcanic bubbles are connected by passages and transformed into living spaces — a central sitting area with a palm tree growing through an opening to the sky, a swimming pool set into the lava, gardens, and a studio. The upper level retains Manrique's original studio with his paintbrushes and personal belongings intact. The foundation displays works by Manrique, Picasso, Miró, Tàpies, and Chillida from Manrique's personal collection, alongside rotating contemporary art exhibitions. The iconic lava-bubble living room is one of the most photographed interiors in Spain. Entry fee applies.
