Cueva de los Verdes

A section of the same volcanic tube system as Jameos del Agua, stretching approximately 1 km of the 7 km total lava tube formed by the La Corona eruption. Named after the Verdes family who historically owned the land, this cave system was opened to the public in 1964 and later enhanced with lighting and access designed by Jesús Soto, a collaborator of César Manrique. Guided tours lead visitors through narrow passages, vaulted chambers up to 15 metres high, and past striking colour variations in the basalt walls — reds, ochres, blacks. An optical illusion known as the "secret of the cave" is revealed by guides. Historically, the cave served as a hiding place for residents during pirate attacks in the 16th and 17th centuries. The temperature remains constant year-round at approximately 19°C. A concert hall is used for musical performances. Entry fee applies; part of the CACT network.
