Caldera Blanca

The most popular volcanic hike in Lanzarote, a 6 km (round trip) trail to the rim of a perfectly preserved volcanic crater. Caldera Blanca ("White Crater") is approximately 1.2 km in diameter and 458 metres high, one of the largest craters in the Timanfaya volcanic field outside the national park boundaries — meaning it's free to access. The trail begins from the village of Mancha Blanca and crosses a lava field before ascending the crater's flanks. The hike takes approximately 3–4 hours round trip at a moderate pace. From the rim, the views encompass the Montañas del Fuego, La Geria wine region, Timanfaya National Park, the Atlantic coastline, and on clear days, the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura. The interior of the crater is a flat plain of solidified lava. The trail is well-marked but completely exposed — start early morning (before 8 AM in summer), bring at least 2 litres of water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear. No shade, no facilities.
