Museo Atlántico (Playa Blanca)

Europe's first underwater contemporary art museum, located in clear Atlantic waters off the coast of Playa Blanca in southern Lanzarote at a depth of 12–15 meters. Created by the internationally acclaimed British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor (famous for underwater museums in Cancún and the Grenadines) and opened in 2016, the Museo Atlántico consists of over 300 life-sized figurative sculptures installed across an area of 2,500 m² on the sandy seabed within the protected Lanzarote Marine Reserve. The sculptures are cast from pH-neutral marine cement designed to promote coral growth and marine colonization, meaning the artworks are constantly evolving as sea life establishes itself on the figures. The most famous installation is 'The Raft of Lampedusa' — a sculptural recreation of the 1818 Géricault painting, depicting a rubber boat of refugees, a powerful commentary on the European migration crisis with particular resonance for the Canary Islands as a migration route. Other groups include 'Crossing the Rubicon' (35 figures walking toward a wall, representing climate change denial), 'The Human Gyre' (200 figures arranged in a circular formation), and 'The Portal' (a mirror-framed gateway). The museum is accessible only via guided diving or snorkeling tours through authorized dive centers in Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen. No prior diving experience is necessary for the snorkel option (the shallowest sculptures are visible from 4–5 meters). Diving tours last approximately 4 hours total (including transport, briefing, and 50 minutes underwater). Prices: approximately €50–60 for snorkeling, €80–100 for diving (equipment included). Minimum age: 10 years for snorkeling, 16 for diving. Tours must be booked in advance through registered operators. The visibility is usually excellent (15–25 meters) and water temperatures range from 18°C (winter) to 24°C (summer). A unique, thought-provoking, and genuinely unusual museum experience unlike anything else in the Canary Islands. Not suitable for non-swimmers or those uncomfortable in water. Combine with a visit to the nearby Marina Rubicón in Playa Blanca.
