The most essential cultural visit in Lanzarote — the former home and studio of César Manrique (1919–1992), the visionary artist and architect who almost single-handedly shaped Lanzarote's unique aesthetic and architectural identity. Manrique built his home in 1968 on top of a volcanic lava flow from the 1730–1736 eruptions, ingeniously incorporating five natural volcanic bubbles (underground cavities formed by cooling lava) into the living spaces. The result is a breathtaking fusion of architecture and geology: the ground floor is a conventional modernist house with large windows overlooking the lava field, while the lower level (built into the bubbles) contains a series of interconnected rooms — a sitting area with a fireplace, a swimming pool grotto, a dance floor, and a garden with palm trees growing up through the collapsed roof of a former lava bubble, all naturally temperature-controlled by the surrounding volcanic rock. The house is preserved exactly as Manrique left it, displaying his personal art collection including works by Picasso, Miró, and Chillida, alongside his own paintings and sculptures. The garden and the views over lava fields to the Atlantic are stunning. The foundation also runs a gallery with rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. This is the place to understand Manrique's philosophy of 'art-nature/nature-art' and his successful campaign to prevent high-rise development on Lanzarote. Open daily (including Sundays) 10 AM–6 PM (July–September until 7 PM). Tickets: €10 adults, €5 children. Allow 1–1.5 hours. The foundation is extremely popular — arrive at opening time or book online to avoid waiting. Combine with visits to Manrique's other works: Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río, Jardín de Cactus, and the Monumento al Campesino. A must-visit for anyone interested in 20th-century art, architecture, or the unique Canarian aesthetic.
