Playa de Papagayo

The most beautiful beach in Lanzarote and a sublime sunset location — Playa de Papagayo is a perfect crescent of golden sand sheltered between volcanic headlands in the protected Los Ajaches Natural Monument at the island's southern tip. The beach is part of a series of unspoiled coves (Papagayo, Puerto Muelas, Caleta del Congrio, Playa de la Cera) known collectively as the Playas de Papagayo, each offering a private-feeling sunset experience. At sunset, the west-facing coves catch the last light directly — the golden sand, turquoise water, and dark volcanic rocks create a stunning natural color palette. The sheltered nature of the coves means calm water that reflects the sunset colors like a lagoon. Papagayo is one of the few beaches in Lanzarote that offers a clear view of the sun sinking directly into the ocean horizon, with no landmasses in the way (the next land west is the Americas, over 5,000 km away). The natural setting feels genuinely wild — no buildings, no promenades, just sand, rock, and ocean. Access is via a 3 km unpaved track from Playa Blanca (a small toll of €3 per vehicle applies, which funds conservation). The drive takes 10 minutes on a rough but passable road (suitable for standard cars). Arrive at least one hour before sunset to park and walk to your chosen cove. No facilities at the beach — bring water, snacks, and a towel. Nudism is common and accepted. After sunset, head back to Playa Blanca for dinner at the Marina Rubicón. The return drive in twilight through the Ajaches volcanic landscape is atmospheric but requires caution — drive slowly. Best months: May–October for long evenings and warm water; winter sunsets are spectacular but cooler. A genuinely wild beach sunset experience.
