Mirador del Río (Haría)

César Manrique's masterpiece viewpoint, built into the 475-meter Famara cliff at Lanzarote's northernmost tip. The Mirador del Río (Viewpoint of the River — 'Río' referring to the narrow strait between Lanzarote and La Graciosa, the 'Río') offers one of the most spectacular panorama sunsets in the Canary Islands. From this dramatically situated bunker-like structure (designed by Manrique in 1973 and camouflaged into the volcanic rock), visitors look out across the 1 km-wide El Río strait to the Chinijo Archipelago — the uninhabited islands of La Graciosa, Montaña Clara, and Alegranza — arrayed across the Atlantic like a miniature Galápagos. At sunset, the western-facing viewpoint delivers a front-row seat as the sun sinks directly into the ocean beyond the islands, painting the sky in vivid oranges and purples while the Famara cliffs glow red behind you. The interior spaces, with their signature Manrique white curves, large windows carved into the rock, and minimalist design, create a serene, James Bond-villain-lair atmosphere. The on-site café serves drinks on a terrace with the same views. The viewpoint is a protected space from the strong trade winds that buffet this exposed northern location — you experience the dramatic landscape in comfort. Open daily 10 AM–5:45 PM (last entry 5:15 PM). Tickets: €6 adults, €3 children. The viewpoint closes before sunset in winter (the sun sets after 5:45 PM in summer only) — check sunset times for your visit dates. Best months: June–July when sunset occurs before closing time. The drive to reach the mirador along the winding LZ-202 road through the volcanic malpaís of northern Lanzarote is an experience in itself. Combine with the nearby Jameos del Agua or Cueva de los Verdes.
