Montañas del Fuego — Timanfaya National Park

Walking on Mars — the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) in Timanfaya National Park are the product of the most recent volcanic eruptions in the Canary Islands (1730–1736), which buried a quarter of Lanzarote under lava and created one of the most starkly beautiful volcanic landscapes on Earth. While the interior of Timanfaya is strictly protected and only accessible via the guided 'Ruta de los Volcanes' bus tour (40 minutes, included in the park ticket, €20), the 'Ruta del Litoral' (Coastal Trail) is a spectacular 13 km linear guided hike (approximately 4–5 hours) that runs along the park's wild Atlantic coastline on the western edge of the lava fields. Led by official park rangers, this trail traverses a dramatic landscape where the lava flows from the 18th-century eruptions met the sea, creating a shoreline of black volcanic rocks, hidden coves, and fascinating formations including lava tubes, 'malpaís' (badlands) terrain, and salt-tolerant coastal vegetation. The hike offers a perspective of Timanfaya that the bus tour cannot — up-close contact with the volcanic rock, the sound of the Atlantic pounding the lava coast, and the sense of walking through a landscape that is still in the process of being colonized by life. Advance reservations are mandatory (book through the official national park website or the Mancha Blanca visitor center — places are limited to 25 people per day). The hike is moderately demanding with some uneven terrain; sturdy hiking shoes and plenty of water are essential (no shade). The meeting point is at the car park near the coastal salt flats (Salinas de Janubio area). Guided hikes typically run Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, but schedules vary — book weeks in advance during peak season. Free (beyond the park entry fee). Best months: November–March (summer is dangerously hot). Combine with the bus tour of the volcanic interior and a meal at the El Diablo restaurant (where food is grilled over volcanic heat). Timanfaya is the definitive Canarian volcanic hiking experience — raw, beautiful, and utterly unique.
