Caldera Blanca

Lanzarote's best free hiking trail and one of the most rewarding volcanic summit walks in the Canary Islands — Caldera Blanca (White Crater) is a perfectly formed volcanic crater at 458 meters, the largest of its kind on Lanzarote, located in the protected Parque Natural de los Volcanes just north of Timanfaya. The trail is a 6 km circular route (approximately 2.5–3 hours) starting from the small hamlet of Mancha Blanca. The walk begins along a flat lava plain — the black, ropy 'pahoehoe' lava of the 18th-century eruptions — before beginning a steady, moderate climb up the flank of the volcano. As you ascend, the views expand dramatically: the Montañas del Fuego stretch to the south, the Atlantic Ocean frames the west, and on the clearest days, the volcanic cone of Montaña Clara on the Chinijo Archipelago is visible to the northeast. The crater rim offers a spectacular walk (approximately 1.2 km circumference) around the perfectly circular depression — the interior of the caldera is filled with golden grasses and wildflowers that contrast sharply with the black lava exterior, explaining the name 'Caldera Blanca' (White Crater). The summit plateau at 458 meters is the highest point accessible on foot in the area, offering 360-degree views of Lanzarote's volcanic heartland. The trail is well-defined with stone cairns marking the route across the lava section, but the crater rim section is more rugged. Free access, no permits required. The trailhead is at the Ermita de los Dolores in Mancha Blanca (limited parking; arrive early). No facilities on the trail — bring plenty of water (at least 1.5 L per person) and sun protection (zero shade on the entire route). Sturdy hiking shoes are essential — the lava rock is sharp and uneven. Best months: October–April; do not attempt in July–August (extreme heat, no water, no shade). A 5-minute drive from the Mancha Blanca visitor center (where you can pick up trail information) and 15 minutes from the Timanfaya entrance. Combine with the Timanfaya bus tour for a full volcanic day. Caldera Blanca is a genuine hidden gem — far less visited than Timanfaya but offering the best walk-up volcanic crater experience on Lanzarote. The sense of achievement and the panoramic reward at the summit make this one of the island's essential hiking experiences.
