Roque de los Muchachos – Hiking & Stargazing

La Palma's highest point at 2,426 m, home to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory — one of the world's premier astronomical observatories with 17 telescopes from 60+ research institutions. The site offers spectacular hiking along the crater rim of Caldera de Taburiente with panoramic views of the entire island, and on clear days, Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro. The GR 131 trail crosses the summit ridge. La Palma was declared the world's first Starlight Reserve (2007) and a UNESCO Starlight Reserve (2012) due to its pristine dark skies protected by law. Guided stargazing tours operate from the summit area (Astro La Palma, Ad Astra La Palma). The annual Transvulcania ultramarathon (128 km, 8,500 m cumulative elevation) crosses this terrain, one of the world's most challenging trail races. Accessible by road LP-4 from Santa Cruz de La Palma (45 min). Temperatures at the summit can drop to near freezing even in summer — bring layers.
