Ruta de los Volcanes (Volcano Route — PR LP 19 / GR-131)

La Palma

Category: must-visit-places 28°36'54.0"N 17°50'06.0"W (Start: Refugio del Pilar) | Central ridge

Arguably the most spectacular day hike in the Canary Islands — the Ruta de los Volcanes is an 18-kilometre trail running along La Palma's volcanic spine (Cumbre Vieja ridge) from the Refugio del Pilar recreational area (1,450 m) to Fuencaliente on the southern coast. The trail traverses a surreal landscape of volcanic craters, cones, lava fields in every shade of red, orange, black, and ochre, with panoramic views of both the east and west coasts simultaneously. Duration: 6–8 hours one way, rated strenuous due to length and exposure (no shade — sun protection and 3 litres of water per person essential). The most popular logistics: park at Fuencaliente and take a pre-booked taxi (~€35–45) to the start at Refugio del Pilar, then hike back to your car. Best hiked October through May when temperatures are cooler. The trail was partially affected by the 2021 Tajogaite eruption towards its southern end — check the Cabildo de La Palma website for current trail status before setting out. As part of the GR-131 long-distance trail network, the Ruta de los Volcanes is one of the most photographed hiking routes in the Canaries, featured in numerous international hiking publications.
