Playa de Nogales (Dramatic Wild Beach)

A spectacular and dramatic wild black sand beach on La Palma's rugged north-east coast, considered by many to be the most beautiful beach on the island. Playa de Nogales is a 400-metre crescent of dark volcanic sand backed by towering cliffs reaching 100–150 metres in height, covered in native vegetation. The beach is reached via a long stone staircase descending from the cliff-top car park — the walk down is scenic; the walk back up is demanding. Due to strong Atlantic currents, swell, and powerful waves, swimming can be dangerous and is only recommended for strong, experienced swimmers under calm conditions — there is no lifeguard service. The beach is ideal for experienced surfers and bodyboarders, photographers, and those seeking a dramatic natural setting. Facilities are minimal — bring all water and food. The beach is undeveloped, with no restaurants or shops at beach level. Sunsets from the cliffs above the beach are stunning. The beach is a protected natural area within the island's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
