Museo Insular de La Palma (Santa Cruz)

La Palma's principal museum, housed in a former 16th-century Franciscan convent adjacent to the Church of San Francisco in the historic center of the island capital. The Museo Insular (Island Museum) covers the complete history of La Palma through three main sections: Fine Arts, Archaeology, and Natural Sciences. The Fine Arts collection occupies the convent's former chapel and cloister, featuring religious art from the 16th–18th centuries (including a notable collection of Flemish paintings — reflecting La Palma's role as a wealthy trading port during the Atlantic trade era), traditional Palmeran crafts, and a collection of 19th and early 20th-century Palmeran paintings. The Archaeology section documents the Benahoare people (the indigenous inhabitants of La Palma, related to the Guanches of Tenerife), with exhibits of ceramics, stone tools, petroglyphs, and skeletal remains. The Natural Sciences section covers the geology of La Palma (the most volcanically active of the Canary Islands in recent history, with the 2021 Tajogaite eruption being the latest), the island's flora and fauna (notably the endemic La Palma giant lizard, Gallotia auaritae, and the rare laurisilva forest of Los Tilos), and the celebrated astronomical skies. The museum has a pleasant courtyard garden and a small gift shop. The building retains its original 16th-century wooden Mudéjar ceiling in the chapel, a beautiful example of the fusion of Spanish and Moorish architectural traditions that characterizes much Canarian colonial architecture. The museum serves as an excellent introduction to the island before exploring further. Open Monday–Friday 10 AM–8 PM, Saturday 10 AM–2 PM, closed Sundays. Tickets: €5 adults, €3 concessions. Allow 1–1.5 hours. Located a short walk from Calle O'Daly and the Plaza de España. Free entry on Thursday afternoons.
