Los Cancajos Family Beach (Breña Baja)

La Palma's most family-oriented beach, located on the east coast in the small resort area of Los Cancajos. This black volcanic sand beach is protected by natural rock breakwaters that create calm, shallow lagoons — ideal for young children to paddle and swim safely. The beach holds a Blue Flag designation for water quality, safety, and services. Facilities include lifeguards (summer months), showers, toilets, a beachfront promenade with cafés and ice cream shops, and a children's playground directly on the promenade overlooking the sea. The shallow, rocky pools at the southern end of the beach are excellent for supervised snorkeling — children can spot colorful fish, sea urchins, and small crabs in the clear water (bring water shoes for the rocky areas). Sunbeds and parasols are available for rent. The beachfront promenade is flat, paved, and wheelchair/stroller-friendly, stretching about 500 meters with benches and shaded areas. The beach is rarely crowded even in August, offering a relaxed alternative to the packed beaches of the larger islands. Parking is available along the coast road (free). A 10-minute drive from Santa Cruz de La Palma or accessible by bus (Line 500). Combine a morning at the beach with an afternoon visit to Maroparque (5-minute drive). Beachside cafés serve simple children's meals (pizza, pasta, sandwiches) and Canarian snacks. The beach is particularly popular with local families on weekends. Best visited during June–October for the warmest water temperatures. Volcanic sand can get hot — sandals or water shoes recommended.
