Puerto de Tazacorte

La Palma's most reliable and accessible ocean sunset — Puerto de Tazacorte is a charming fishing port and marina on the island's sunny west coast, facing the open Atlantic with no geographical obstructions between the harbor mole and the setting sun. The harbor mole (breakwater) is a popular sunset gathering spot — locals and visitors sit on the stone wall with their legs dangling over the water as the sun sinks directly into the ocean. The marina's palm-lined promenade, the brightly painted fishing boats bobbing in the harbor, and the backdrop of the banana-plantation-covered Aridane Valley hills provide perfect foreground composition. Several waterside restaurants and cafés (mostly simple, family-run establishments) offer sunset-view terraces serving fresh fish and local Palmeran wine — the sunset dining experience here is genuinely local and unpretentious, unlike the tourist-heavy sunset bars of the larger islands. Across the water to the south, the dramatic cone of the San Juan volcano is visible, and after very heavy winter rains, the plume of the island's waterfalls can occasionally be seen tumbling from the cliffs. Tazacorte enjoys La Palma's best weather — the west coast is significantly sunnier and warmer than the east, making reliable sunsets almost year-round. Free access and ample parking along the harbor. A 15-minute drive from Los Llanos de Aridane (the island's largest town). Combine with a pre-sunset visit to the nearby Playa de Tazacorte (a black sand beach just south of the port, popular with families) or the banana plantation walking routes in the Aridane Valley. After sunset, the harbor restaurants continue serving dinner — try the local 'cherne' (wreckfish) or 'vieja' (parrotfish) grilled with mojo verde. Best months: all year, but October–March offers the clearest skies after the summer haze dissipates.
