Mirador de la Cumbrecita (Caldera de Taburiente)

One of the most geologically spectacular sunset viewpoints in the Canary Islands — the Mirador de la Cumbrecita offers a jaw-dropping panorama of the entire Caldera de Taburiente, an 8 km-wide, 1,500-meter-deep erosion crater that forms the centerpiece of La Palma's national park. The viewpoint is perched at 1,287 meters on the southern rim of the caldera, looking north across the immense depression filled with pine forests, dramatic rock formations, and the winding course of the Taburiente river far below. At sunset, the western walls of the caldera are illuminated by the setting sun, the pine forests below glow in soft golden light, and the enormous scale of the geological feature — one of the largest erosion craters on Earth — is thrown into sharp relief by the angled light and long shadows. The mountains to the east and south begin to cast their shadows across the caldera floor, creating a constantly shifting play of light. The viewpoint is accessible via a well-maintained trail (30 minutes walk from the car park at the Cumbrecita access point — the road to the viewpoint itself is closed to private cars; a shuttle bus operates in summer). Alternatively, the nearby Mirador de los Roques (also on the caldera rim, 5 minutes' drive) offers an equally spectacular alternative that is accessible by car. Free access. The crater rim is at altitude — temperatures drop quickly after sunset; bring warm layers even in summer. The road to the Cumbrecita access point (LP-202) is winding but well-paved. Best months: April–October for the clearest skies and most reliable sunset conditions. The caldera experience is fundamentally different from a coastal sunset — this is about watching a primeval geological landscape transform in the dying light rather than the sun sinking into the sea. Combine with stargazing — La Palma's skies are among the world's darkest, and the national park is a designated Starlight Reserve.
