Cubo de la Galga / Los Tilos (Laurel Forest)

La Palma's enchanted forest — the Los Tilos and Cubo de la Galga area protects one of the finest remaining examples of the Macaronesian laurel forest, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a living relic of the subtropical forests that covered southern Europe during the Tertiary period. The Cubo de la Galga trail (PR-LP 6, approximately 5 km circular, 2–2.5 hours) is the standout walk: a magical circuit through a dense 'tunnel of green' where ancient laurel trees, til (Til) trees (from which Los Tilos takes its name), giant tree heathers, and an understory of ferns, mosses, and liverworts create a cathedral-like atmosphere of filtered green light and permanent moisture. The air is cool, damp, and profoundly peaceful — the loudest sound is often the dripping of water from giant fern fronds. The trail climbs to the Mirador del Espigón Atravesado viewpoint, where the canopy opens to reveal the Barranco del Agua gorge and, often, a sea of clouds filling the ravine below. The Los Tilos Visitor Center (at the base of the trail) is an excellent starting point, with displays on the laurel forest ecosystem, a café, and toilets. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels (moderate ascent, some steps). Free access. Parking at the visitor center (free, but fills quickly on weekends). A 30-minute drive from Santa Cruz de La Palma. Best months: year-round (the laurel forest has its own microclimate — it's cool and moist even in summer, and the cloud forest atmosphere is most magical with some mist). Waterproof jacket recommended — the drizzle in the forest is part of the ecosystem, not a weather problem. Combine with the nearby Charco Azul natural swimming pools in San Andrés y Sauces for a post-hike swim. The Cubo de la Galga experience is fundamentally different from the volcanic hikes elsewhere — this is a walk through a living fossil forest, a genuine botanical time capsule that feels like stepping into a prehistoric world. One of La Palma's must-do experiences.
