Caldera de Taburiente National Park

One of the most geologically monumental hiking destinations in Europe — the Caldera de Taburiente National Park protects an 8 km-wide, 1,500-meter-deep erosion crater that is one of the largest such formations on Earth. The park is a hiker's dream, with a network of well-maintained and color-coded trails that allow you to explore every dimension of this colossal natural amphitheater. The signature hike is the descent from the rim into the caldera floor: starting from the La Cumbrecita viewpoint area (1,287 meters), the PR-LP 13 trail descends into the interior through 'La Angustura' (The Anxiety) — a thrilling section of the trail that zigzags between near-vertical rock walls — emerging onto the caldera floor alongside the Taburiente River. The river flows year-round (one of the few permanent water sources in the Canary Islands), creating a lush oasis of Canarian willows, ferns, and multi-colored rock pools in the heart of the volcanic desert. The trail continues along the riverbed (in the dry season you can walk directly in the shallow river, in winter waterproof footwear is essential) to the Cascada de Colores (Colored Waterfall), a stunning natural feature where mineral-rich spring water has painted a rock face in vivid shades of yellow, orange, and green. A shorter accessible alternative is the walk from the La Cumbrecita viewpoint (the Mirador de la Cumbrecita itself is a 30-minute walk from the car park) which offers the breathtaking 'balcony view' of the entire caldera without the demanding descent. The park also offers trails around the crater rim with views into the caldera from multiple perspectives. Free access (some trails require advance registration at the park visitor center in El Paso due to capacity limits). The main trails are demanding (the full floor hike is 18 km return, 6–7 hours, with 1,000+ m elevation change) — good fitness and preparation essential. The visitor center (Centro de Visitantes de la Caldera de Taburiente, in El Paso) has excellent geological displays and up-to-date trail information. A 45-minute drive from Santa Cruz de La Palma. Best months: April–October (winter rains can make the river impassable). The Caldera de Taburiente is a genuinely world-class hiking destination — less famous than the Teide, but for many hikers, even more spectacular. La Palma's designation as a UNESCO Starlight Reserve means that the night skies here are among the darkest on Earth — combine a day hike with stargazing for an extraordinary double experience.
