Valle Gran Rey – Whale Watching

The waters off La Gomera's south-west coast are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Whale Sanctuary of El Hierro-La Gomera). Over 21 cetacean species have been documented, including resident populations of pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, spotted dolphins, and seasonally sperm whales, Bryde's whales, and fin whales. Boat excursions depart from Valle Gran Rey harbour (2–4 hour trips) with eco-certified operators following responsible whale-watching guidelines. Combined snorkeling and whale-watching tours available. The deep offshore waters (over 1,000 m) attract pelagic species. Valle Gran Rey also offers excellent hiking (GR 132 coastal trail), surfing at Playa del Inglés and Playa de Vueltas, and a relaxed bohemian atmosphere. Best sightings: calm mornings April–October. The Valle Gran Rey area is also famous for its spectacular sunsets.
