San Sebastián de La Gomera (Capital & Historic Port)

The capital and main port of La Gomera, founded after the Spanish conquest in the 15th century, with approximately 9,000 residents. San Sebastián is historically significant as the final port of call for Christopher Columbus before his first crossing to the Americas — he departed from this harbour on 6 September 1492. Key landmarks include the **Torre del Conde** (Count's Tower), a 15th-century fortress and the oldest military building in the Canary Islands, built by Hernán Peraza around 1450. Adjacent to the tower is the **Pozo de la Aguada** (also called Pozo de Colón), the well where Columbus is said to have drawn water to baptise the Americas (the waters from this well are traditionally taken by pilgrims). The **Casa de la Aduana** (Customs House) houses a visitor exhibition on Columbus. The **Parador Nacional de La Gomera** sits on a hilltop overlooking the town and Teide on Tenerife. The port operates regular ferries to Los Cristianos (Tenerife, 50 minutes) by Fred Olsen Express and Naviera Armas.
