Roque de Agando (Los Roques Natural Monument)

The most iconic volcanic plug on La Gomera and one of the most photographed landmarks in the Canary Islands. Roque de Agando rises 1,251 metres above sea level and stands approximately 200 metres above its base. It is a phonolithic volcanic plug — the solidified magma core of an ancient volcano, exposed after millions of years of erosion removed the softer outer cone. Together with nearby Roque de Ojila and Roque de Zarcita, it forms the **Los Roques Natural Monument** (since 1994). These rock formations are sacred to the pre-Hispanic Gomeran people (the Gomeros), and archaeological remains including burial sites have been found in the area. An excellent viewpoint (Mirador de los Roques) directly at the base of Agando offers spectacular views and photo opportunities from the GM-2 road. The rock face is a nesting site for ospreys and kestrels. Climbing is prohibited due to the ecological and archaeological sensitivity of the site.
