Mirador de la Degollada de Peraza (The Great Viewpoint)

One of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Canary Islands, located on the central mountain ridge of La Gomera at approximately 1,000 metres above sea level. From this point, you can see both sides of the island simultaneously — to the east, San Sebastián and the Atlantic with Tenerife's Mount Teide on the horizon; to the west, the deep Barranco de la Villa valley cascading toward the sea. The viewpoint is named after the Peraza family, the Norman-descended feudal lords who ruled La Gomera in the 15th century — it was near this spot in 1488 that Hernán Peraza "the Younger" was killed by the Gomeran chief Hautacuperche during an indigenous uprising against Spanish rule. A monument marks the approximate location. The viewpoint has parking, interpretive panels, and is a starting point for several hiking trails into the Garajonay National Park. It is on the GR-131 long-distance trail.
