Chorro del Cedro (El Cedro Waterfall & Stream)

The highest permanent waterfall on La Gomera, located in a deep gorge in the El Cedro forest area of Garajonay National Park. The waterfall drops approximately 150 metres through dense laurisilva forest, with the water originating from the perpetual mist condensation in the forest canopy. The waterfall is most impressive after winter rains (November to March) but flows year-round due to the forest's "horizontal rain" capture system. The falls are visible from several points along the El Cedro trail (S-37) from Hermigua. Access to the base of the waterfall requires a steep, unofficial path and is not recommended for inexperienced hikers — the official viewpoints provide excellent views from a safe distance. The stream (Barranco del Cedro) that feeds the waterfall continues down to provide drinking water for much of the island. The area around the waterfall is home to endemic laurel pigeons (Bolle's and White-tailed) and the Gomeran lizard. Swimming in the pools at the waterfall base is possible but the water is very cold year-round.
