Agulo (The Green Balcony / El Balcón Verde)

Often described as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, Agulo is a picturesque small town of approximately 1,200 residents perched on a natural plateau at 350 metres above sea level on La Gomera's north coast. The town is nicknamed "El Balcón Verde" (The Green Balcony) or "El Bombón de La Gomera" (The Sweet of La Gomera) for its green setting and charm. Agulo is built in a semi-circular amphitheatre shape directly beneath a massive volcanic cliff wall, with the Atlantic Ocean directly below. The town features well-preserved traditional Canarian architecture with narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and a striking church (Iglesia de San Marcos, first built 1607, rebuilt 20th century). The recently opened glass-floored **Mirador de Abrante** (see above) extends over the town from the clifftop above. Agulo has several hiking trails, including the dramatic path down to the rocky beach of San Marcos below. The town produces excellent local cheese and is a gateway to the Garajonay National Park trails. Agulo received the distinction "Uno de los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España" (One of the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain).
