Torre del Conde & Museo Arqueológico de La Gomera

The most important historical monument in La Gomera — the Torre del Conde (Count's Tower) is a well-preserved late 15th-century military tower and fortress built between 1447 and 1450 by Hernán Peraza 'the Elder,' the Castilian nobleman who led the conquest of La Gomera. The tower is a classic example of late medieval Spanish military architecture: a solid square-plan stone tower with walls 2 meters thick, a central courtyard, and battlements at the top. It was built to protect the early Spanish settlement from attacks by the indigenous Gomeran people and served as the residence of the island's feudal lords (the Peraza family) for nearly 300 years. The tower played a role in one of the darkest episodes of Canarian history: in 1488, the indigenous Gomerans rebelled against the Peraza family's brutal rule and besieged the tower, where Beatriz de Bobadilla (wife of Hernán Peraza 'the Younger') held out until relief arrived — an event that led to the execution and enslavement of a large portion of the island's indigenous population. The tower is now a museum open to visitors, with restored interiors housing exhibits on the island's history, including archaeological finds from the pre-Hispanic Gomeran culture. The adjacent modern building houses the island's small archaeological museum with collections of ceramics, stone tools, shell jewelry, and skeletal remains from the pre-Hispanic period. The museum provides context for the Bimbache and Gomeran indigenous cultures of El Hierro and La Gomera. The tower is free to view from the outside (it's a popular photo spot); museum entry is minimal. Open Monday–Friday 10 AM–5 PM, Saturday 10 AM–2 PM, closed Sundays. The tower is located in a pleasant park (Parque de la Torre del Conde) with palm trees and benches, a short walk from the ferry terminal. Allow 45 minutes. Combine with the nearby Plaza de la Constitución and a walk along the harbor-front promenade. The tower is particularly atmospheric in the late afternoon when the golden light illuminates the stone walls.
