Sunset Bars — Valle Gran Rey
Valle Gran Rey is La Gomera's most atmospheric evening destination, renowned for its bohemian sunset bar culture. The valley's western orientation provides front-row views of the sun setting directly into the Atlantic. The sunset bars cluster around two areas: Playa de Vueltas and Playa del Inglés. The most celebrated is Bar El Mirador — a clifftop bar with panoramic views, serving excellent mojitos, Canarian wines, and fresh fruit cocktails as the sun sinks over the ocean (arrive 1 hour before sunset to secure a table). Other notable sunset bars: Bar La Playa directly on Playa del Inglés (more casual, great for beer and simple tapas), and Finca Argayall — an organic farm-café that holds sunset gatherings with live music. The area also has excellent seafood restaurants, most notably Restaurante El Puerto in Vueltas harbour. The sunset bar tradition originated with the valley's German hippie community in the 1970s and remains wonderfully low-key. The nearby village of La Calera offers atmospheric evening dining in cave houses built into the cliff. The evening atmosphere blends international travellers, surfers, and locals. Most bars operate on a relaxed schedule — arrive around 7:00 PM and stay through sunset (approximately 8:45 PM in summer, 6:15 PM in winter).
