La Gomera's legendary sunset — arguably the most famous sunset in the Canary Islands among the alternative-traveler community, and for good reason. Valle Gran Rey, on the island's west coast, offers an uninterrupted view of the sun sinking into the Atlantic from a series of beaches and bars that have been drawing sunset-worshippers since the 1970s. The ritual: as the sun approaches the horizon, people gather on Playa del Inglés (a black volcanic sand beach), at the beach bars (chiringuitos) along the shore, or on the seafront terraces of Vueltas village. The Bobo Bar (a legendary beach bar with palm-thatch roof, cold beers, fresh juices, and an eclectic international crowd) is the iconic sunset spot. As the sun sinks, impromptu drum circles often form on the beach — a tradition that has been part of Valle Gran Rey's bohemian identity for decades — creating a hypnotic rhythm to accompany the visual spectacle. The sun sets directly in front of the valley, with the Atlantic stretching unbroken to the horizon (no landmasses visible). After sunset, the afterglow can last for over an hour — the western sky transitions through vivid purples, pinks, and deep blues, often reflected in the calm waters of the nearby Charco del Conde natural pool. The atmosphere is relaxed, communal, and genuinely magical. Free access to the beach and sunset. No dress code, no velvet ropes — just sand, sea, and sky. Valle Gran Rey is a 1-hour drive from San Sebastián (winding mountain road — not recommended after dark if you're not a confident driver; consider staying overnight in the valley, which has abundant accommodation). Best months: November–April when the winter-sun crowd fills the valley with an international mix of visitors. Combine with daytime hiking in the Garajonay National Park or dolphin-watching boat trips from Vueltas harbour. A sunset experience that feels far removed from the commercialized resorts of the eastern islands.
