Valle Gran Rey Trail (Ridge-to-Coast Descent)

One of the most dramatic and rewarding descent hikes in the Canary Islands — the trail from the mountain village of Arure (900 meters) down through the terraced palm groves and ravines to the coastal settlement of Valle Gran Rey is a 7 km journey (approximately 3 hours, 800-meter descent) through La Gomera's most spectacular changing landscapes. The trail starts in the crisp, pine-scented air of the mountain ridge before plunging into the Barranco de Arure — a deep ravine lined with Canarian date palms (Phoenix canariensis), the iconic symbol of La Gomera. The path is an old 'camino real' (royal road) — a stone-paved trail built centuries ago for farmers and traders to move between the inland villages and the coast. As you descend, the landscape transforms dramatically: from pine forest to terraced smallholdings of mango, avocado, and papaya, through the 'palmeral' (palm grove) — one of the densest concentrations of Canarian palms on the island, their fronds creating a dappled green light — to the coast where the palm trees give way to the banana plantations of the lower valley and finally the black sand beaches and whitewashed houses of La Playa and Vueltas. The views throughout the descent are spectacular: the deep blue Atlantic framed between the ravine walls, the terraces of the Valle Gran Rey stretching below, and (on clear days) the silhouette of El Hierro on the distant horizon. The trail is well-defined and signposted. Moderate fitness required — the constant descent can be hard on knees (trekking poles recommended). Sturdy shoes essential. Free access. The trailhead at Arure is reachable by bus (Line 6 from San Sebastián de La Gomera) or car (parking available at the top). Arrange transport or be prepared to use the bus for the return — the ascent is demanding. Best months: October–May (summer heat makes the exposed descent difficult). This trail is La Gomera in microcosm — mountain to sea in 3 hours, through a landscape shaped by generations of Gomero farmers and one of the most beautiful palm-filled valleys in the Canary Islands.
