Vegueta (Historic Old Town of Las Palmas)

The historic founding quarter of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, established in 1478, and the original core from which the city grew. Vegueta is a beautifully preserved district of narrow cobblestone streets, colonial-era buildings with ornate wooden balconies, and palm-shaded squares. Key landmarks include the Santa Ana Cathedral (begun 1497, with Gothic, Renaissance, and Neoclassical elements — construction spanned over 400 years), the Casa de Colón (Columbus House — a museum documenting Christopher Columbus's 1492 voyage; he stopped here for ship repairs before crossing the Atlantic), the Museo Canario (the largest collection of pre-Hispanic Canarian archaeology and the Cro-Magnon-era mummies of the Guanches), and the Plaza de Santa Ana with its iconic bronze dog statues (symbols of the Canary Islands). The adjacent Triana district is the commercial heart with pedestrian shopping streets and modernist architecture. Vegueta is a designated Historic-Artistic Site.
