Pico de las Nieves (Highest Peak)

At 1,949 metres, Pico de las Nieves (Peak of the Snows) is the highest point of Gran Canaria. The summit is accessible by car via the GC-130 and GC-134 roads to within 50 metres of the peak, making it one of the most accessible high-altitude viewpoints in the Canary Islands. The name derives from the snow wells (pozos de nieve) built here in the 17th century to store winter snow for use as ice in Las Palmas. The viewing platform offers spectacular panoramic views across the island — on exceptionally clear days, all seven Canary Islands can be seen: Gran Canaria itself, Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. The trail S-51 connects Pico de las Nieves to Roque Nublo (approximately 5 km one way) through pine forests. The nearby recreational area of Llanos de la Pez offers camping (permit required from the Cabildo). The area can be cool and windy even in summer.
