Maspalomas Dunes (Dunas de Maspalomas)

A 400-hectare protected Natural Reserve featuring the most important sand dune system in the Canary Islands. The mobile dunes reach heights of up to 10 metres and are constantly reshaped by the trade winds that transport coral and shell particles from the ocean. The ecosystem includes La Charca — a Ramsar-protected coastal lagoon that is a critical stopover for 27 migratory bird species. The iconic Faro de Maspalomas lighthouse (built 1890, 56 metres tall) marks the southern tip of the island. Camel rides are available along the designated dune trails. Zone 1 (near the lighthouse) is a designated naturist area. The dunes form part of the Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve, with boardwalk access points from the Hotel Riu Palace area and from Playa del Inglés. Best visited at sunrise or sunset when the sand glows gold and the temperatures are comfortable.
