Cenobio de Valerón (Archaeological Site)

One of the most important and spectacular archaeological sites in the Canary Islands, known as the "Monastery of Valerón." This is a vast pre-Hispanic communal granary carved into a natural volcanic rock overhang on the Montaña del Gallego, used by the indigenous Canarii people between approximately 600 and 1,500 years ago. The site contains over 300 small chambers (silos) carved into the soft volcanic tuff, arranged across several levels. These chambers were used to store grain (barley and wheat) as a collective food reserve — guarded and managed communally for times of scarcity. The site is protected by a massive volcanic promontory that creates a natural shelter. A modern visitor centre and walkway allow close viewing of the chambers. The site demonstrates the sophisticated social organization of the pre-Hispanic Canarian people. Entry is affordable (~€3). Located just off the GC-2 motorway, about 20 km from Las Palmas.
