Caldera de Bandama (Volcanic Crater)

A remarkably well-preserved volcanic crater approximately 1 km in diameter and 216 metres deep, formed about 5,000 years ago during the island's most recent volcanic period. The circular trail S-20 (3.5 km) descends into the crater floor where an abandoned farmhouse and remnants of agricultural terraces can be explored — evidence that the fertile volcanic soil was cultivated until the mid-20th century. The Pico de Bandama viewpoint at 569 metres offers panoramic views across the crater, the eastern coastline, and Las Palmas in the distance. The crater is named after a 16th-century Flemish merchant, Daniel Van Damme, who established vineyards in the area. The Bodega del Monte winery nearby offers tastings of local volcanic wines. The site is a designated Natural Monument. No permit required; wear sturdy shoes for the crater descent.
