Museo Canario (Las Palmas)

The Canarian Museum, founded in 1879, houses the largest and most important collection of pre-Hispanic Canarian artifacts in the world. Located in the historic Vegueta district of Las Palmas (the original 15th-century core of the city), the museum occupies a handsome 19th-century building with a traditional Canarian central courtyard. The collection contains over 2,000 Guanche skulls and skeletons (one of the world's largest craniological collections), mummies, pottery, tools, weapons, jewelry, and the famous ídolos (small ritual figurines). The star exhibit is the 'Cenobio de Valerón' collection — artifacts from the largest pre-Hispanic grain storage complex in the Canary Islands (over 300 silos carved into a volcanic cliff on Gran Canaria). The museum also displays the 'Pintaderas' — unique clay stamps used by the Canarii people to imprint geometric designs, possibly for body painting, bread marking, or ritual purposes, whose exact function remains debated by archaeologists. The collection of Cro-Magnon type skulls has contributed significantly to the study of the origins of the Canarian indigenous population, confirming North African Berber ancestry through DNA analysis. The museum is arranged thematically covering daily life, religion, funerary practices, food production, and crafts of the ancient Canarians. Some exhibits (particularly the mummies and skeletons in glass cases) may not be suitable for very young or sensitive children. The museum is a serious academic institution as well as a public attraction, with an active research program and library. Open Monday–Friday 10 AM–8 PM, Saturday–Sunday 10 AM–2 PM. Tickets: €5 adults, €3 concessions, free Thursday afternoons. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Located in Vegueta — combine with Casa de Colón (3 minutes' walk) and a stroll through the historic cobblestone streets. A must-visit for understanding the indigenous heritage of the Canary Islands.
